I have purchased movies on itunes that I would like to watch on my laptop but I don't want to waste all the memory downloading them onto the hard drive. Is there a way to stream them on my mac?

If I understand correctly, you want to play movies on one computer that are downloaded into iTunes on another computer in your home, without having to transfer the media file for that movie to the computer displaying the movie, is that right?
Home Sharing is a service that allows you to do exactly that. See this article for further description and details on how to set it up -

iTunes prefs > Store.
Tick Show iTunes purchases in the cloud.
All iTunes purchases will now show up in your iTunes.
If they are not downlaoded to your computer, you will see a cloud icon with a down arrow.
Just double click the movie to stream/play it.
Click the cloud icon to actually downlaod it.
