iPhone backups on iTunes have disappeared

I have bought an iPhone 6,\.

I want to transfer everything from my iPhone 5 to it.

i backed up the iPhone 5 to my macbook Pro.

When i went to set up the new iPhone i was told that i couldn't simply add the data from the iPhone 5, but i would have to set it up as a new phone.

I went through the steps to do that.

Then I was intending to restore the new phone with the backup of the old phone.

But in attempting to do so, iTunes did not list the backup i had just done. The most recent backup available was over three months ago.

How do i get the new iPhone to access the backup done today from the old iPhone?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.1.3
