Unlocking Mobile Carrier

Support advised me that I can unlock my iPad Air, to use any mobile carrier by doing a factory reset. They told me that it can be done on all newer iPads. I was told to backup through iTunes then do the factory restore, install new sims card and install the backup. Has anybody else done this with good results? Any info would be appreciated.
