i just installed a new hard drive on my macbook pro. I formatted it and installed Lion through the recovery (command D) process as i didn't have a boot disk for yosemite. It installed fine but when it reset to complete the install it came up with the flashing folder instead of booting up, if i put the original hard drive back in it works fine. is the brand new hard drive faulty?
MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
Connect the new drive to the MBP externally. Open Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair. If the disk cannot be repaired it may very well be faulty.

hi, thanks for the advice, i did as you suggested and the hard drive was fine, it is showing that the operating system is on the hard drive but upon startup it still shows the flashing folder.
Assuming you have the original HDD installed internally and the new one externally, boot the MBP with the OPTION key down. It should show both HDDs and the recovery partitions. If so, select the external (new) HDD and see it boots the MBP.

hi, thanks for the advice, i did as you suggested and the hard drive was fine, it is showing that the operating system is on the hard drive, upon further investigation it turns out the Sata cable was defective. Replaced and all is working fine.
