Can Second Monitor Play VLC Videos?

I use a mid 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks. I plan to use my TV as a second monitor. I know that I have to use AppleTV to connect wirelessly to my TV. Will AppleTV allow me to play "VLC" videos?😕
