iTunes won't sync content to 2nd gen Touch

I've had trouble with my 2nd generation iPod Touch (Model Number MC086LL; Version 4.2.1). I've attempted to sync my reset iPod Touch with my iTunes (12.1.0.50) on my MacBook Pro, which is currently running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. Is this no longer possible? The device shows up as connected to my iTunes, I can click the sync option, but it happens within seconds and no music actually transfers to the device.
