In need of help on recovering an itouch?

I have gotten an itouch from my mothers boyfriend. I believe it to be a 3rd gen as it is 32gb but no camera and it seems like the newest model by its shape and a black insert where later models have cameras. He bought the thing years ago and had a passcode on it. after moving recently he found it and could not remember the password for the life of him! he asked if i wanted it i could have to fix. So i looked up and found some tutorials on how to restore the device. I have done literally everything i have found online, recovery mode, dfu mode, downloading recboot and tinyumbrella and multiple ways of each. Everytime I try to do recovery mode it just goes right back to lock screen. Dfu mode again just boots to lock screen. I was having .dll issues with recboot then solved all of that and got it running. Then it said ipod starting in recovery mode and windows game me a "no error" code and the ipod did absolutely nothing. tinyumbrellla did not even detect ipod no matter what settings i played around with. Itunes does detect device and just says that it cannot connect due to password and to unplug, disable password then try again. I have used multiple cables, 3 computers and have been doing this for at least 3 hours now. So what could be the problem? is there a way that somehow he had set it up to NEVER be able to recover again? that doesnt seem very logical but at this point i dont know what to think. I have done this to numerous itouches that i have bought online. I generally get ones with cracked screens and wipe them out so i use recovery mode to do so. Have never encountered a problem like this before. Serial is 18013U036K2 model no A1318. if that helps. One thing that comes to mind is that maybe the thing is just broken like hardware wise? But at same time, how would it boot up show background image, home screen, lock screen and everything seems to work to a point where i cant go any further.

What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen

iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad

If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.

If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:
