Command + r not working

I am attempting to erase my hard drive and reinstall, but I can't get to recovery mode to do so. I'm reading that perhaps that means my machine doesn't have the recovery drive necessary - what's my next step so I can properly enter disk utility and erase?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Insert the computer's original DVD or a Mac OS X install DVD and restart with the C or Option key held down.

Click here, phone Apple, and order a replacement, or buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.
