Q: Windows 7 Freezing/Flashing Screen

I'm at my wits end here and really hoping I don't have to go back to the Apple Store... again.

 

I just recently reinstalled a Windows 7 partition on my mid-2009 15 in. MacBook Pro and am experiencing flashing screen issues, leading to straight up freezing. This is only happening on my Windows partition, my Mac side is running just fine. I have uninstalled, repartitioned, and reinstalled three times now and this issue seems to keep happening. I have also attempted to update my graphics card driver on the Windows side and this doesn't seem to have solved it either. It usually happens when video is streaming, but I also noticed it happened when I moved the machine from the arm of my couch into my lap. When it hit my lap, the screen began flashing and it froze. I tested it a couple of times on the Windows partition and got the same results. However, moving the machine in Mac mode appears to do nothing. This issue just started happening yesterday afternoon. My Windows partition was running smoothly for at least two weeks before this started occurring.

 

A little background info: I have taken my Mac to the Apple Store three times in the past month and a half for repairs. Apparently there were a lot of things going haywire in my system. To make a long story short, I had to have it sent off to be repaired by Apple. While it was sent off, they replaced the following: Logic board, hard drive, optical drive, battery, and the memory. It's running practically like new for the most part now.

 

Here are my specs:

 

OS X Yosemite

Version 10.10.2

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)

Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB

 

Hopefully someone has a suggestion, I'm about to pull my hair out!

    1. Please run AHT - Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support. This is just to verify that there are no loose connections.

    2. You have a new computer with an old display/old case.

    3. Do the same graphics 'glitches' happen when connected to an external monitor and running W7?

    4. Are BC drivers installed - Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033 ?

    5. Yosemite may be running BCA 5.x, but check Control Panel -> System -> Boot Camp icon in W7 for BC package version.

    I wasn't able to get the Hardware Test to show up when I restarted and held D. I'm assuming I have to have my applications install disc to run it. I'll look for it and get back to you on that.

     

    I also don't have an external monitor to check and see if the glitches are still happening there.

     

    My Boot Camp version simply says 4.0, so I'll go download the drivers at the link you provided.

    I wasn't able to find my applications disc, so I don't think I will be able to run a hardware test unless there is another way. I don't think it would be a loose connection or I'd be experiencing it on my Mac side as well, but as I said, it's running perfectly fine. Could be wrong though!

     

    On the BC drivers note: I installed the drivers you linked me to and installed them, but I am still experiencing the issue.

    According to How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support, your MBP is MacbookPro 5,3. Please see https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest and specifically MacBookPro5,3 Mac-F22587C8 for the Diagnostics software. You will have to burn this to a CD which will become you AHT disk. Usually, the second Grey disk is the hardware diagnostics disk.

     

    For external monitor, take it to the nearest apple store, if possible, and tell the manager that you want to connect it to a display and test. You can also make an appointment, and show the Apple Genii the issue.

    Hi, ZThompson33:

         I happen to have the same problem and i went to apple store and did the AHT today, hope my info might help.

    1.Accroding to AHT result, my md212(MBPR Macbook Pro 10,2)'s hardwares are fine. So it may means that the flashing problem is not a hardware issue.

     

    2.My md212 was release in late2012 and experinced NO repairment, so it may also having nothing to do with the "old display/old case" issue.

     

    3.Did not try the external display test too.

     

    4.My BCA version is 5.1--the latest version for win7 64bit

     

    5.I checked Control Panel -> System -> Boot Camp icon in W7 for BC package version, is 5.1 too.

     

    Let along the flashing issue, win7 run perfectly on my mac so far. And the guy at apple genius bar also have no idea about why it keep flashing and how to fix it (I'm in china).

    i solved the problem today.

    it was the display driver cause the blinking.

    the older version driver works perfect!

    i have tried servel, only this version works for my mbpr:

    version: 8.15.10.2598

    release date: 2011-12-15

    size:145.2MB (about)

     

    all the version whcih realsed in 2014-2015 can NOT solve  my blinking problem.

    the result could be vary from one to another.
