Default reminder from 4S Calendar

When I enter an appointment in my calendar, it immediately syncs with my gmail calendar which is great. However, the reminder it defaults to is a pop-up. Conversely, when I am able to make the appointment on my google calendar and it syncs with my iphone, it reminds me in the way I choose, which is a text and email. Is there any way to select that from my phone or am I stuck with the pop up?
