Connecting to external display via USB

Hi everyone,

Instead of purchasing a thunderbolt-DVI adapter to connect my Macbook Pro Retina to an external monitor, I tried using the Targus DisplayLink3000 instead (I've owned this for a while). It allows me to connect to my external monitor via USB-to-DVI. Now, the quality on the external monitor is a bit choppy and sometimes the colors are a bit off/pixelated sometimes - note this is a result of the USB-to-DVI and not the monitor itself. That, I can deal with. What I am wondering however, is if this is healthy for the Macbook? Will it ware out any hardware faster or degenerate graphics over time? Let me know if my question doesn't make sense.

Thanks for your time!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), null

Only if it creates excess heat. Otherwise the MBP does not care that the video is poor.

Ciao.
