I currently have a mac book pro MAC OS X 10.6.8 and i cant update because my computer wont go any further than the blank desktop background when restarting. It also looks like it skips the update downloads but still says they have downloaded and to restart the computer.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Mac. To get you started with getting it back up and running again, take a look at the article below to resolve issues with start up. Start with booting up into Safe Mode to see if it boots properly. If it does, then restart your MacBook Pro like normal and it should work after that.
