iTunes cannot connect to Apple TV; Airplay works

we have an ATV3 that has worked perfectly until recently.

I noticed recently that clicking on the MP3 stream of a local radio station was delayed as iTunes 12.1.0.50 says it can't connect to the Apple TV3, which is on the same network. Clicking the 'x' makes iTunes quit trying and the stream commences as expected.

However, I can't see the program screen on the ATV anymore; we see the black background with Airplay instructions on the left, and WiFi instructions on the right.

At the same time, though, Airplay from iPhone 6 works, showing the choices of Headphones or Apple TV.

I restarted everything, of course. I don't know the next step to troubleshoot the issue- it's possible that the ATV is dead. Maybe Genius Bar?

The ATV is seeing iTunes at some point because it shows my default slide show [unless this is downloaded to the ATV previously, don't know].

Here's what I see:

And it's not the battery in the remote, as I thought it might be, darn it; the ATV beeps when I press the Menu button on the remote.
