Pictures disappearing and unsupported image format

I'm having a problem with pictures disappearing and changing to unsupported image format. I created a project on my computer at our house in FL and transferred the project to a portable HD to bring home & import to my main computer. The NEF thumbnails show up but when I click on one to see it at another size or edit it it disappears and goes to the black image with the yellow "unsupported image" triangle.

I am running the latest version of Aperture, the latest camera RAW and OS 10.10.2

Can anyone help?

How did you 'copy' the project to the portable drive? Did you export the project as a new library or did you do something else?

How is the portable drive formatted?

I exported the project to the portable drive and then imported it as a new library. I also exported/imported it via a USB drive with the same results. I've done this same thing plenty of times before with no problem up to this point.

How did you export the project? You failed to indicate that. Also you never mentioned how the external disk is formatted. Finally I'm not sure what this

actually means. The same results as what?

Sorry, I meant that the pictures disappear the same way in the project that was imported from the USB drive. I actually had used the USB drive first and thought that there was something wrong with it so I used the portable HD instead.
