Ridding my machine of MacKeeper

Hi,

I stupidly allowed MacKeeper onto my computer and now having trouble getting it off. I followed a link that was shared back in 2013 that folks said worked for them. Within that link I went to this http://help.mackeeper.zeobit.com/Manual/GettingStarted/UninstallingMacKeeper.htm l which has a visual step by step. I am able to put the icon for the application in the trash (step 4) but I am never actually prompted to UNINSTALL it (step 5). I've emptied my trash but I can tell something is still wrong because I'm getting tabs popping up every time I try to open a new one myself. Is this still MacKeeper or is there something else causing all the pop ups? Is MacKeeper still on my machine?

Thanks

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

See the quote below from http://www.thesafemac.com/ongoing-mackeeper-fraud/

The bottom line is that MacKeeper should not be used. The company behind it has shown a long history of unethical behavior, and the software isn’t worthwhile. If you have it installed, you should remove it immediately.

If you are suffering from MacKeeper ads or redirects popping up on sites where they should not appear, my AdwareMedic app should help you solve that problem. If you are prevented from accessing the AdwareMedic site, turn off JavaScript in your web browser or restart the computer in safe mode to download the app, or download it on another computer, or try the manual removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide.
