Is there a way to control how many messages Mail.app keeps on the phone?

Is there a way to control how many messages Mail.app keeps on the phone? There used to be a setting in previous versions of iOS, but I can't find it in iOS 8.

What's the metric? Hows does iOS determine which and how many messages are kept on the phone?
