how to restore an Air?

The hard drive in our MacBook Air has died. I intend to buy a new hard drive. Right now I am looking at the stock at iFixit. I anticipate that the new SSD will be blank. It will not have an OS on it.

I have the old hard drive backed up to an external hard drive. When I install the new, blank SSD into the MacBook Air, how do I restore from the external hard drive?

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

To restore a Time Machine backup created by Mac OS X 10.7.5 or earlier, you need a separate OS.

To restore a Time Machine backup created by Mac OS X 10.8 or newer, restart from the recovery partition on the drive and use Time Machine on it.

To restore a bootable clone, start up from it and then clone it to the new drive.
