iPad 2 Older Mail Messages Lost

Mail only shows messages from last 1.5 months. Older ones were deleted and we don't know why. We checked Settings -> Mail, and under Show it had 50 messages selected. We changed that to 1,000 messages. Under our account advanced settings, we changed Delete from Server from After 7 days to When deleted from inbox. Our mail server doesn't have the older messages because our setting was deleting messages from server after 7 days. We thought it only deleted e-mails from inbox if we asked it to.
