Can I force a conversion of a downloaded file to open to Excel?

I recently purchased an online course to learn Excel for possible job opportunities. After beginning the course, I found that when the course director sent me a file to download to practice what I had just learned, OS X converts the file to Numbers, and a Numbers spreadsheet opens up, rather than the Excel spreadsheet that was sent. Is there any way to force the file to open to what was sent rather than numbers?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

If you have Excel installed, drag the document to the Excel icon in the Dock or open it from within Excel. If not, no.
