can you reset the admin password if you have lost the orginial password if so how?

We have lost the administrators password and we are unable to do any downloads or updates without it. Can you reset it when you do not have the original password and if so HOW? This is our personal computer not a business. The only time the password was used was when we did updates etc so it was not memorized.
