Q: new cds eject before playing, no prob with old ones

Thought maybe I needed to upgrade to Yosemite, which I did--no help.

Why the grinding noise before iMac spits it out? Does not happen with older cds, or burned ones.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), memory--4GB RAM

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).

Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd

Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.

You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.

At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

This will bring up the Help Menu.

    I'm getting nowhere...

Why would 2 specific music cds just purchased on amazon, play on a boom box and not the iMac? Other cds, commercial or burned, do play on the iMac.

Is your boom box a slot or tray loader?

It's possible the Amazon cds are damaged, scratched, etc. in some way.   Did you clean the superdrive as previously suggested and/or tried all the other suggestions?  If so, you can return the cds.

boom box is old school Radio Shack top tray loader

I ordered a disc cleaner, so we'll see. Don't make sense though that the cd is defective if it plays on one machine and not another

thx, Boomer, will let you know!
