Google Talk and Jabber account won't connect when Messages is first launched

I have Yosemite 10.10.2 running on my early-2011 MacBook Pro 15"

I have five chat acounts configured in Messages:

  • iMessage
  • Bonjour
  • AIM
  • Google Talk
  • Jabber XMPP (OpenFire)

When Messages is first launched (i.e. after a reboot or a login), the Google Talk and Jabber account will not connect. The only way to get them to connect is to either logout all of the accounts and relogin manually --OR-- I have to use Activity Monitor to force the "imagent" process to relaunch.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes?

I don't have any firewalls activated, nor are there any other login items that use the network and might block Jabber. The only error that I can find in the Console is the following:

2015-03-03 3:24:38.149 PM imagent[370]: [Warning] SocketStream: error The operation couldn’t be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 2.) occurred on input stream

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,

If forcing the IMAgent item to Quit in the Activity Monitor seems to temporarily sort the issue try deleting the com.apple.imagent.plist

In the Finder use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.

Select the Library that then appears in the menu list.

Navigate to Preferences.

Find the .plist and drag it to the Trash.

Restart the computer as the IMAgent starts up when the Mac does.

This will recreate the .plist and should eliminate any issue with it.

Thanks for this tip. This has been driving me crazy for the last few weeks. Initially I thought it was a jabber issue on Google's side or maybe even comcast, but after setting up messages w/ gtalk on another computer on the same connection, I realized something else must be afoot. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Ralph

Quick one for you. I have a brand new MBP running yosemite and when I try to add my gtalk account to messages, it gives me the default server settings. I already know that this does not work, but for the life of me, I cant figure out how to edit. They are greyed out and i am not logged in.. but yet the client keeps telling me that either I am logged in, or when I disable the account, it still wont let me edit the server settings. Any suggestions?

thx

Mark

Hi,

In Messages >Preferences > Accounts untick the "Enable this Account" box first then the Server settings tab will be editable.

Hi,

In that case also try deselecting it in System Preferences > Internet Account for Messages and then set up the account in Messages separately (Delete and restart the process if required).

Ok,

IN that case go to ~/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.ichat.Jabber.plist and drag it to the Trash.

Restart Messages (it will recreate the jabber .plist)

Does that help ?

If it does not does this also effect other Accounts in Messages ?

It is late where I am now and it will be a while before I catch up again.

Hi,

Are you using a Mac User Account that is subject to Parental Controls ?

It seems you can access the Preferences but don't have permissions to change them.

If it was a Permissions thing you would be able to change things for the sessions even if the change was not written to the .plist.

Did the com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist get recreated as this may tell is if that is a feature of this issue ?
