magsafe caught on fire!

hey everyone...

when using my macbook pro today my magsafe caught on fire and melted. there was a bright flame and lots of smoke. the smell was terrible. i quickly pulled the cord from my computer and disconnected it from the wall.

I was lucky that it happened when i was working on the computer as it could have been much worse.

This is my first magsafe and i am very gentle with it. I don't travel with my macbook pro at all.

This has been known to happen in extreme rare cases. Apple will happily replace your power adapter.

Just to be on the safe side, I get them to run some diagnostics on your system to make sure nothing was harmed as your laptop is succeptible to voltage spikes. Hard drives are notorious for popping up with bad sectors have even low quality power supplies.

Last thing you want is something to show up down the line in your hardware that translates to possibly losing all your data.

Personally, there would be no way I would happlessly continue using my laptop if that had happened without a thorough analysis that all my hardware was prim and proper.

Aren't you glad they developed the magsafe technology? Just yank the cable and "pop," off it comes 😉

I have been concerned about my magsafe as well the end of my power adapter right at the end of the (too short IMHO) strain relief gets a good workout. It kinked shortly after buying the MBP and continued work will break the conductors inside causing what you saw.

I think the magsafe is a good idea but the strain relief needs to be longer. Much longer.

i thnk apple should recall them and replace them with longer plastic rings then the short ones inside the connectors now which do not prevent the wires from getting too twiste dup to the point where they shirt out.

I see lumps on mine from it twisting around, it seems to not twist back straight no matter what i try to do to it, and i fear this exact problem here may happen by surprise.
