how long to partition a 500gb hard drive under disc utility

i opened disc utility for the purpose of erasing a drive and restoring it. following the erase portion, it automatically started partitioning it. this operation has been going on for 1 day and 4 hours! someone help!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10), 16 gb ram, 250 gb samsung 850 evo
