find my iphone stuck on hunting compass

macbook pro, 16G, yosemite using various isps and my icloud to find my iphone 5s

i have checked out the recommended suggestions and nothing seems to work

my phone is on, find my iphone is on, i have restarted the iphone, the internet is working, i have only one icloud account, my device is registered etc

what happens is that i get to the app in the cloud, the compass shows up, the compass begins to hunt or search -that is swing repeated across north-

as it usually does --but then unlike usually, it never stops to show the map or location

what could be the matter
