I am using OS X 10.3 Panther to install. When I get to the "choose a location" prompt, there is no hard drive showing to select. I put a 120gb Seagate PATA HD in the unit. Maybe it just isn't Mac compatible? The original HD is long gone.

First thing to check would be the jumper setting on the drive. There should be a diagram on the drive label to show the correct setting. With only one PATA device on the cable the jumper has to be set for primary - used to be called "master".
Also, you may need to Format the drive first to MacOS extended, look for Disk Utility at the top of the screen.
I tried master, slave, and cable select. There is still no HD showing in the box to select for any function. The hard drive motor is spinning normally.
Did you format the drive, as BDAqua has reminded?
During the OS installation procedure, after the language selection and before you get to the where to install screen, a menu bar is displayed. You can select Utilities and verify if the drive is detected, then format it as per BDAqua's specs, above.

Hi, I don't remember 10.3, but...
When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
As soon as I click OK on the user agreement it goes to the "select a destination volume to install the Mac X OS" screen. The box below the prompt is completely EMPTY. There is no drive or volume to select. I also do not see any formatting toolbar anywhere, only a "go back" prompt.
I finally found a disk utility when I clicked on INSTALL at the upper left. I will try it now.
Managed to get the OS loaded and working now. Thanks for the assist. I will be back with more questions for sure!
