I added a user on my account and made it the admin. Now when I need admin ability, I cannot remember that password. My 'general' user is no longer an admin so I cannot use that. Please help.

The easiest way to do this is in terminal. You would type resetpassword and hit enter. you will get a user box to change the password. If you cannot use terminal in the user account you are in. Then you would have go to recovery and use utilities -ternimal or boot to single user.

For Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks

I did this. But when I get to the screen that shows 'Select the Volume containing the user account' there is nothing there to select. The box is completely empty.
I am using Yosemite.
By default it's your startup volume. Did it give you something to click on at all? There is single user that can do this also.http://macosx.com/threads/howto-reset-user-password-via-single-user-mode.300019/
Nope it gave me no option at all. When I go into 'users and groups' in system preferences, the only 'user' that says 'admin' is listed under 'other users' and it is completely greyed out. I do not even have the option to click on the 'other user' that is the admin so I can change the password.
Try it in single user mode.
That's good. That was single user mode. The same as the link I gave you.
