iCloud using Calendar between Mac Air and iPad

I have just set up a new iCloud account and want to be able to sync my calendar on my Mac Air with my iPad both ways.

However when I add an event on my iPad it appears on my Mac Air but not the reverse? How can I add to my Mac and have it appear on iPad in the Calendar as well?

I have seen this several times.

With few exceptions it is in the calendar you are adding it to.

Try and modify an event you see in both.

Make a change on the iPad and them on the Mac.

If you see the changes made from both on both.

Double check the default calendar for the iPad and for the Mac.
