How to back up my '07 iMac C2D to my new i5 iMac?

Question -

I'll be picking up my new 27" iMac tomorrow from the Apple Store as well as picking up a new external 1TB HD from MicroCenter. What I wanted to know how can I move EVERYTHING from my old C2D iMac over to my new one? I want everything to be as exact as possible other with exception to the new iMac having the latest OS. Is it possible? Is this something that Time Machine can do? I mean I really want everything...all the way down to the icons on my current C2D to be in the exact place on my new one? Is something like this even possible? Please let me know if you have any advice or suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any help provided...

iMac (17-inch Late 2006), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

I would warn you that in my experience Migration Assistant moves *Everthing* including stuff you probably don't want. The option I have used is to manually move files. iCloud is nice in that it automagically synces mail etc. Good that.

Good luck
