Message count at 900 but mailboxes are empty. Cannot clear message count.

iPhone 6 Plus, IOs 8.1.3. From the main menu, the Mail icon displays a message count of 900, yet there are no messages in any mailbox. Also, at the 'Mailboxes' page, there is a mailbox indicating a count of 900, and an 'Unread' folder with a message count of 900, but when you open the mailbox or the 'Unread' folder, there are no messages. New messages can be received and read; only the 900 messages cannot be deleted or found.

Hi DennyD1,

From your post I see that you have a phantom email folder in your account, with 900 unread messages, and are unable to locate said emails. To start troubleshooting this issue, please follow the steps below to remove and add your email account back on to your iPhone. This will resync the data between your iPhone and the email server.

  1. To make sure that you're connected to the Internet, open Safari and go to www.apple.com.
  2. Log in to your email provider's website to make sure that the account is active and the password is correct.
  3. Make sure your settings are correct using Mail Settings Lookup.
  4. Restart your iOS device.
  5. Delete the affected email account from your device.
    1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    2. Tap the affected email account.
    3. Tap Delete Account.
    4. Add your account again.
