Updated to IOS 8.1.3 and it ruined my ipad air

I regret updating....never had issues before and now wifi connection is constantly lost...pages won't load....apps freeze up. SO

I did a hard reboot. I checked my wifi. Nothing works. pages only partly load, then get hung up. Apps like facebook get stuck refreshing. Sometimes reliable apps just crash. When trying to search online...even just this post... Too difficult to get pages to load completely. Why does't Apple make sure updates work before pushing them! I loved my iPad and now it's useless.

Not quite sure what I am supposed to be trouble shooting when device worked fine BEFORE update.

Because tthere are a lot of variables, not just the device and version. If you have never heard the expression "correlation does not imply causation" this is a good time to learn it. There are a HALF BILLION iOS devices in use, and probably at least 100 million of them have been updated to 8.1.3. if this was an iOS problem you would see millions of posts here and banner headlines in every newspaper in the world "Apple screws up big time-Epic Fail". I bet you haven't seen any headlines like that. I haven't.

If you just came to rant I won't bother replying again. If you actually want help fixing it here are some basic troubleshooting steps:

  • Does this happen with every wifi network or only your home network? If it is all networks focus on the iPad; if only your home network, the router.
  • If it's only the Home network reboot your router. Unplug it from the wall for about a minute to force it to reconnect to the phone and find an interference-free channel.
  • Likewise, if that doesn't fix it, go to Settings/WiFi, tap on the i next to the network name and tap "forget this network." Then reconnect.
  • The next step if it still doesn't work is to go to settings/general/reset - Reset Network Settings. This will erase all wifi passwords, but you won't lose any other data.
  • By now it will probably be fixed. If it isn't you can try restoring iOS using iTunes in case the update did not install correctly.
  • If the issue happens with all networks and none of the above steps fix it take the iPad to an Apple Store. Make a Genius Bar appointment first.

Same thing has happened to my iPhone 6. Using 8.1.3 is just horrific. Have even reinstalled from fresh twice rather than a backup and its still not 100% functional. The biggest insult is that the apps crashing the most have had at least 2 updates to them since the issues started over a month ago.

This is the worst iOS version ever created and I've been using it since 1st gen iPod touch.

Although I truly appreciate your useful tips, I do not appreciate your condescending tone. I do not need to learn the concept "correlation does not imply causation".As a biochemist, I am quite familiar with the concept. As with any logical fallacy, identifying the reasoning behind the argument does not imply the resulting conclusion is false. I may not have seen HEADLINES, however I have seen many online comments of others with the same issue. I am not sure why you have such an arrogance in dealing with others who are unhappy with their Apple products crashing after updates...but to deny there is a connection is actually ILLOGICAL in my book.

I realize your purpose is to solve problems and not listen to "venting"....however perhaps if people are able to express common issues...Apple might realize the problem may be in the update.

I actually tried dealing with Apple directly and could not chat to a specialist without paying a fee. Thus.....I am VOICING my issues here.

While you may be a fine biochemist, that doesn't mean you have any experience in technical troubleshooting. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Like the rest of us, Lawrence is a user, just one with more experience in the field than most Apple Geniuses. He has graciously offered to help you at absolutely not charge. If you really want to resolve the issue, it seems foolish not to take him up on the offer.

Apple is not reading here. And, the Terms of Use of these forums specifically prohibit ranting. If you want to VOICE your concerns to Apple, use the feedback link:

You can chat with Apple online without paying a fee, and you can visit an Apple store for free support. The fee is only for telephone support after the 90 day free telephone support period is over, unless you purchased Applecare +, which extends the telephone support period to 2 years. You can also get free telephone support for hardware problems.

Have you tried any of the troubleshooting steps I posted? Most WiFi issues that appear after an update are router issues. The router fails to assign an IP address, "thinking" the device already has one. But it doesn't, because the IP address in the phone is in volatile memory that is lost during the update. To see if this is the problem go to settings/wifi and tap on the i to the right of the network name. If the IP address begins 169.254 this means the router did not assign an IP address when the phone asked for one. It's 100% a router issue in this case.

A tad touchy in the rarified air.

Realize, you are reading a condescending attitude into the post that may not actually be there. Posts are obviously hard to interpret.

Rants without real information are simply worthless here. You haven’t given anyone a reason to care & originally provided zero for anyone to go on.

Lawrence actually wrote back - with detail suggestions.

It might be worth trying those, if you have not, rather than concentrating on feeling slighted.

Without knowing what you tried (which you subsequently hinted at) & what else may be in your mix, there is little to troubleshoot.

Did you reboot the ROUTER too?

Are you generating a lot of background searches with too many tabs open simultaneously - or some other thing that may make you partially culpable? Not running an AIR here, rather an older iPad, but there are no issues on it with the update.

If you made a backup before the update (a smart thing to do) then, you should have recourse togo back,

or try another reload, in case something hiccuped during the update.

I am quite amazed at how this discussion is evolving. I do truly appreciate Lawrence's tips and will try them. I appreciate that someone with his expertise is willing to spend his time helping others. However, when people who are not tech experts (which I never claimed to be) are coming to these boards...it is reasonable to expect them to be a bit frustrated. A lesson on logical reasoning is not necessary. I also am amazed at the attitude that only 3 people in the world have this problem. I did not realize this was such a wide read forum. A search of the web will reveal more. I appreciate the tips and will try them. I am done debating with obvious experts. However (in MY field), if a drug caused 100 deaths, but 100,000 lived. I would be very remiss and open to a lawsuit if I did not investigate a potential problem with that drug....and there are far more variables with living organisms than a list of Apple products.
