iPhone songs won't play in iTunes

I have a lot of songs on my iPhone 4S and when it is plugged into my computer, I can see all the songs on it, but when I unplug it, only 5 songs are on my phone. Also, when I plug it in and try to play a song off my iPhone list, it won't play and there's an exclamation point next to it, but with no other explanation. How do I get my songs back, and where did they go?

Good morning ncggirl,

If you see an exclamation point beside a song, it means that iTunes can't locate it. You may have inadvertently moved or deleted it. You can click on the exclamation point to learn more information.

The resources below will explain how to redownload music you've purchased, and sync information from your iTunes library to your iPhone.
