So while I was texting on imessage, my ipod suddenly signed out of imessage and so I had to re sign in under settings, messages. I entered my apple id and password and then checked off the correct email I had been using. It said it was verifying it but sent me back to the sign in page under settings, messages. I have an ipod 4th gen working with ios 6.1.6 please help.

It sounds as though you have not received your verification email for iMessage or FaceTime when trying to sign back in using your iPod. This article explains what to do -

My email is verified, there is even a check right next to the email when it told me that it was verifying. It just sends me back to the 1st step of imessages. I tried to see if re-verifying was an option but that doesn't seem to be a thing. I then tried resetting my password but nothing changed. I also tried a different apple ID and the same problem arose and that email was verified as well.

I understand that after signing into Messages, the screen seems to default back to the sign in screen. If this is the case, the additional troubleshooting steps that I would recommend is in the attached article.
