I've had my 2009 15" Pro on Yosemite for almost a year now after buying it refurbished. I've gotten so used to putting it to sleep manually, that I forget it probably should do it when I close the lid, but it doesn't. Is there a way I can fix that?

Does the LED battery indicator work? Did it ever?
Yes - Software problem that could be corrected w/ an update.

This one is on step 19:
The Hall Effect sensor is on that cable. That's what causes the MBP to sleep in clamshell mode.
Check the operation of the sensor w/ a magnet.
Some versions of the repair manual talk about this sensor sticking which would imply that these early versions use a reed switch vs the Hall device.
The other less likely problem is that the magnet is missing. It should be in the left side of the display. Use a magnetic metal to check.
I think it might have something to do with the sensor sticking. Do you know how much it would cost me to take it in and have them fix it? I'm not very tech-smart and I'm worried I might do more damage than good.
Can you answer any of those questions I asked or do any of the tests? If not take it to the Apple Store or an ASP and have them check it out. None of the components I reference will cost much unless it's the logic board itself.
