Safari 7.3.1 on Mac OS X 10.9.5 http://www.eezdownloads.com VIRUS FOUND The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus. Press OK to begin the repair process."tapsnake" phishing scam locked into my Safari opening page

I am running Safari 7.3.1 on a Mac Mini using Mac OS X 10.9.5 -- not IOS

a page from http://www.eezdownloads.com is set into my Safari preferences as the opening page

It locks use of Safari while displaying a fake warning:

VIRUS FOUND

The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus.

Press OK to begin the repair process.

and allows only the "quit safari" choice on the Safari menu.

How can I remove this malicious default page from my preferences without being able to use Safari?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.3), Safari 7.0.3 (9537.75.14)
