iphoto and external hard drive

hi,

my iPhoto library lives on my external hard drive and has done so for a while. iPhoto has always recognised it. but for some reason it now does not. it won't show a single photo of my 150gB library.

any suggestions on how i can resolve this? i have a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac running OS X yosemiteI

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

If that fails:

Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

hey,

thanks for your help again with this. i think i am reaching the limit of my abilities on trying to repair this.

strangely iPhoto seems to work (albeit very slowly) when i log in to this computer with my partners login.

iPhoto just gets stuck with the spinning wheel trying to rebuild thumbnail caches with my login.

i haven't tried to download the iPhoto library manager, as our connection is a drearily miserable 3mBps. also, the computer has become very slow.

i guess my next question is

where do i take it? will the apple store perth sort it all out for me? or should i just take it to any computer repair place.

it is quite old now (late 2009) and is in need of something. maybe even replacement? is it possible it is simply too jammed up with information? i have attempted to delete as much as i could from it ( an had successfully moved the entire iPhoto library to the external HD,) but i wasn't confident on what i could and couldn't delete.
