I have an 8 gig (which actually has a capacity of 5.39 GB) iphone 4s. I have 3 apps on my phone which takes up 137 MB. Including podcasts and mp3s, they are taking up 2.28 GB.
Can someone explain to me why my "other" data is 1.6 GB?

other data includes all data not fitting specifically into another category. This can include app data from downloaded apps, pending downloads / updates, settings, message / mail attachments or other uncategorized data.
if you need to free up space you can try deleting apps / messages on device or just resetting and setting up as new again.
There are no pending downloads, my messages take up 6MB, I have 0 mail.
I have 3 apps installed, there's no more to delete.
Resetting and setting up as new? Do you mean making a new apple account?
