iPad cannot be synced because an unknown error has occurred (-54)?

I have been dealing with this problem for months! I have updated everything, and I plug it up to the usb. It will tell me in itunes that it's downloading my photos, and they aren't anywhere to be found. I have icloud, it's turned on, and I'm about ready to chuck this iPad! Never ever had problems with my iphone like this!
