Mt time machine is full and stoped backing up. I dumped a bunch of stuff from my wifes macair old backups and now it's backing us up again but all my old backups are unreadable. My airport extreme utility (the short square variety) is using 5.5.3 and won't work on 10.9.5. I downloaded 5.7 but anm afraid to install.

Where are you backing up to? Your external disk should be at least 2 - 3 times the size of your internal hard drive. It is also best to have it on its own partition if you are backing up something else on the same drive.
As for updating your AE utility: if you have run Software Update and there are no updates, then you have the latest appropriate version for your OS; as it is an integral part of the OS, you can't update it by itself.
