Help I can't login to iMessage and I know my password is correct

i have been unable to login to iMessage for days/weeks now as on the screen where you enter Apple id and password, I sign in. It then asks me to verify the email address to use, which I do and press next. I then end up back at the apple Id sign in page again. How can I fix this?

iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6
