How can I remove startpoint from my mac?

I've searched online and most of the info relates to removing this very annoying malware from Windows machines. I use Chrome browser mostly so do not know if this malware also affects Safari on my Macbook Pro. The worst part is that startpoint will close Chrome on its own and I lose all the open tabs. Chrome reopens with its page set to search.startpoint.com. I immediately close that tab and reopen what I can remember, but I deeply resent a malware program taking control of my system, and I expect it is potentially dangerous. Any experience removing this? I checked the extensions folder in Chrome and there is nothing there related to startpoint.
