TDM Not Working

I have a mid-2010 iMac with mini-display port. This is the target computer I want to turn into a glorious monitor.

I also have a late 2013 MacBook. This is the superfast computer whose ram and hard-drive I want to exploit.

I have a thunderbolt cable which is connected to both machines. Command-F2 does not do anything.

Halp.

If your iMac is a 21-inch model, Target Display mode isn't available. Use a product such as ScreenRecycler.

If your iMac is a 27-inch model, you need to use a Mini DisplayPort cable.

Well that's a little infuriating considering the literature doesn't specify that TDM is a function of screen-size.
