ipad air stalls on step 6 when trying to sync

I'm trying to sync My iPad Air (1st gen) and it is taking FOREVER to sync and stalls out on step 6 (waiting for changes to take effect). I'm using iTunes 12.1.0.50 on iOS 10.10.2 macbook air. Any ideas on why or how to fix it?
