2nd Generation Airport Extreme:
can only do a soft reset using the Reset Button
will not go to the quick flashing amber if i hold reset in for ten seconds before powering up & continuing to hold
have to manually change everything in Airport Utility
anyone know what's goin' on?

There is no other reset. You need to depress the Reset button while the device is plugged in and hold the reset button down until the amber light starts to rapidly blink.
Sometimes you will need to repeat the steps a couple of times to assure a full erase of content.
A 2nd Gen AirPort Extreme is at least 6 years old and up to 7 1/2 depending on when you purchased the product.
5 years is about all that you can expect from a router designed for home use these days, so that may be your issue in a nutshell.
You might be able to reset the AirPort Extreme.....assuming that it is operating correctly.....by using the AirPort Utility application.
Post back if you need a few tips on how to do this. We'll need to know the version of operating system that you are using on your Mac or PC to provide details.

i was hoping u'd reply ....
i can go in and change everything in Airport Utility, that's no problem (its fully functional & up to date)
cannot do a hard reset any way w/o using the reset button that will only do a soft reset?
i guess the reset button/switch is hooped?

Appears that way, but what you are describing above is not a Hard Reset.
If you want to try a Hard Reset......
Power on the AirPort Extreme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button for 8-10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
A slow, blinking amber light would be a clue that the procedure was successful

reset button doesnt do anything when its depressed when already powered up and on green
so, i guess it is the button/swithch thats gone ...
