How do I view the data on Mail App 5.3 with Mavericks?

I've bought an enclosure for the old internal drive of a 2006 iMac running Lion that recently crashed and connected it to my current iMac running Mavericks 10.9.5.

Mavericks will not allow me to open or access the data (emails) on the Mail app 5.3 from the old drive nor will it open the old address book.

I need to access some emails very urgently from the old Mail app 5.3 on the old drive - can anyone help because Time Machine did not back up my Mail box nor my address book?

If the old drive still has an OS on it, you can try booting from that drive to export the e-mails to the Desktop. Then reboot and copy them to Mavericks and import them.

If your new computer came with 10.8 or 10.9 installed on it, this won't work.
