Macbook Pro goes into Safe Sleep Mode + wont wake.

I've only been having this problem recently since i've upgraded the RAM in my MacBook Pro from 4gb to 16gb.

If I close the lid of the computer or manually select sleep mode and leave the laptop for an hour or so, when I return to wake it up nothing happens. It seems to be going into safe sleep mode and I have to manually power off and restart to get the computer to wake.

When it does eventually power back on I get a white screen with the apple logo on, and a progress bar underneath. Then, at the log in screen there is a pop-up saying 'You shut down your computer because of a problem. If you want to open applications that were open etc...'. After logging in there is then another pop-up saying 'Your computer was restarted because of a problem. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.' Below is a image of the report, I'll try to screenshot it and post again if anyone needs to see it in detail:

User uploaded file

I've looked at various forums to try to fix this and I thought I had eventually fixed it when I came across this one: MBP (13-inch, early 2011) goes into hibernation instead of safe sleep upon closing the lid (only when using battery power) I'd done what the best answer suggested and changed the 'standby' and 'hibernatemode' settings in the terminal but this doesn't seem to have worked.

If anyone has any ideas what is wrong or knows how to fix this issue any help would be appreciated! 🙂

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I've tested in safe mode but the same thing still happens. I have to turn it off by holding in the power button and then power back on for it to work again. One thing I have noticed is that when I open the screen or hit a key to wake it up there is no response, but if I then close the lid again the flashing light at the front of the computer lights up. It then goes out again if I open the lid again though so I'm not sure what's happening there..

Mar 5, 2015 1:56 PM in response to lukenewell

I was having a problem similar w/ a MBP 2010 13" running Mavericks. It kept going to sleep and was hard to wake up. I swapped in another battery since I have multiples here in the shop and the problem went away. Even when I put the original battery back in. So possibly it was when you do that you kill all power and it's like the old SMC reset where you could remove the battery. Anyway it stopped the problem but I still didn't trust that battery so I returned the (slightly newer) battery w/ his MBP.

That was with 10.9.5 however because there have been issues like this w/ Yosemite.

Macbook Pro goes into Safe Sleep Mode + wont wake.
