My Canon Pixma MP610 won't print in Yosemite

I have a problem getting my Canon to print and what is confusing me is that it shows up in 'Printers & Scanners" as Idle and I can interrogate it for Ink Levels etc in the normal way but when I try printing from Preview etc to it the "print options panel" shows a small black triangle at the "printer selection" toggle. If I try printing to it anyway and go to the printer dialogue box I get the message "Stopped -No pages found!, 1 page." Also, at the top of the dialogue box I see a message saying that I need to install software...."

I've tried Software Update and get no notification of new s/w. I've been to Canon w/site and it tells me I don't need anything as it's incl. already in Yosemite.

I downloaded and installed a "TwainBridge" fix from a 3rd-party site that reckoned that fixed a similar issue back in Mavericks but that hasn't fixed it.

Can anyone help me please?

The list of printers supported in Yosemite is linked below. Yours isn't on it.

Hi, it may well be that Canon haven't bothered to update the driver for your unit either under 10.10.2. so you might need to try allocating a different driver for your machine in the same way that I had to - it's a bit trial and error though I'm afraid and ultimately you may just end up wasting your time. I had an email from Canon this very morning in response to my req. that they update the driver for my MP610 and they said -

Thank you for your request and for contacting Canon.

In response to your enquiry related to your PIXMA MP610 printer, we would like to inform you that there are no drivers available for your Canon product compatible with Mac OS 10.10.

Since you mention that you were able to use a different driver, could you please inform us what driver did you use?

To explain this lack of availability we would like to provide you with some additional information regarding Canon's policy towards the provision of drivers for new operating systems.

At the time of launch of a new product, Canon generally provides drivers so that the product in question will operate on all existing and known future planned operating systems.

When the launch of a new operating system is announced, Canon reviews the existing product range to see which of these products can be considered for the provision of compatible drivers.

There are many different factors that may influence this decision. These can include (but are not limited to) such factors as the technical compatibility between the new operating system and the Canon product, the cost of driver development, the cost of supporting utility software product updates, the issue of certification of the developed driver by the operating system in question, the expected lifetime of the Canon product and costs associated with quality assurance.

Canon respects the right of its customers to decide to upgrade their operating systems and we attempt to make it clear at the time of purchase which products will function on which operating system.

Furthermore, Canon always advises its customers to check the compatibility of their associated Canon products prior to the upgrade of an operating system. To this purpose, our consumer helpdesk staff are always available to assist customers with such enquiries.

We hope that the information above offers enough explanations with regards to the unavailability of the updated driver that you need.

Once again, thank you for having provided feedback on this matter. We appreciate the time and effort it has taken you to do so.

Thanks for the reply. The funny thing is Canon Phone and Email Support both tell me there are drivers for OS X 10.10.2. We have walked through the installation together. The installation appears to proceed correctly but there are no files in the TWAIN folder of the Image Capture folder. Canon says the MAC is somehow blocking the installation of these files?! What do you think?

There won't be if you have only installed the ICA driver, which Canon provides to Apple for download from the Apple Software Update server. The ICA driver, which is for scanning with Image Capture, is loaded in /Library/Image Capture/Devices.

If you have installed the Canon IJ Scan Utility for the MX472 (known as the MX476 in Australia) which uses a TWAIN driver, then you will have an MX470 series data source file (.ds) located in /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Source folder. And you will also have the Canon IJ Scan Utility located in Applications/Canon Utilities which you can use for scanning. Note that Image Capture does not work with this TWAIN driver.

This is unlikely as the software and drivers are correctly signed for installation on 10.10. And you managed to install the Canon printer driver, which like the ICA driver, is supplied by Canon to Apple. There is an install.log file kept on the Mac that lists all installations performed on the Mac. The Canon person should have gotten you to check this log to see if their theory was correct - which I am sure they did not get you to do. Also, if you open System Information (located under Applications > Utilities) in the left column under the heading of Software you will see an entry called Printer Software. Select this and you will see in the top right pane an entry of Image Capture Devices. Select this and in the bottom right hand pane should be 3 entries showing CanonIJScanner14s.app and a version of 4.0.0. If yes then this confirms the supporting ICA driver has been installed (again, something I'm sure the Canon person did not get you to check).

My MBP, running 10.7.5 was printing with my MP610, no problems. I upgraded to Yosemite, again no probs. My MacBook Air came with Yosemite, no problems when I downloaded what drivers I could. (Strange...). My Mother's iMac was running 10.6.8. I upgraded to Yosemite - clean install... BIG PROBLEMS... no printer. I tried importing the drives from the MacBook Air... no joy. In the end, I downloaded from Canon the drivers for 10.6.8 (Snow leopard) and all appears well!!! How weird? I even get the ink levels showing! That would be my suggestion folks!

My experience was the opposite of this. I did what you said & downloaded & installed the drivers from the last working version I had (10.6.8) for my MP610. It didn't work. I tho't, OK, I'll put the Canon IJScanner1, Canon IJScanner2, & the Canon IJScanner4 in the Trash, but not flush it, restart the iMac and put them back into Library > ImageCapture folder.

However, after restarting I tried printing. Hey, there's the Canon driver: I could print. I opened the ImageCapture app. Hey, it opened, albeit with a slightly different looking interface; and no ink tank info. I could scan.

Summary: For me it seems the old drivers were getting in the way. Chucking them in the Trash set the OS 10.10.3 drivers free.
