Can't Sign in to iMessage for the first time

Hi,

I recently created an Apple account for my old iPod 4, and now I'm trying to sign in to iMessage for the first time. However I simply get an error stating: "iMessage Activation. Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again."

Is this a common issue? Is there any solution?
