restrictions on setting alternate email addresses

I'm trying to set up another email alias and I keep getting this error message "You cannot use this email address. Please try again using a different email address." Are there restrictions on what you can use for an email address, other than already being assigned?

Greetings pdolan1,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are trying to set up an iCloud email alias, but are receiving an error message. If this is the case, you mention this is attempt to set up another alias. You can create up to three aliases for your iCloud account. For this and other information about iCloud aliases, please read over the attached article.
