why won't my spaces delete from mission control?

I have tried everything to be able to get the X to appear over the spaces when I have many of them open during the mission control page. It will not appear. I have looked under every setting and it is not an option to make this disappear. How do I get it to work? i have already tried pushing option/alt and holding it and everything else. The X never appears. What do i do ??
